17 November 2005

FRENCH LICK, Indiana – As reported by the Louisville, Kentucky Courier-Journal: "In a surprise announcement, the developers of an Orange County casino said yesterday that they will shut down the French Lick Springs Resort hotel for a year to speed construction on the $240 million casino project.

"The resort will close Sunday and not reopen until December 2006, when the casino and the hotel's 440 guest rooms are ready.

"In the meantime, about 255 employees of the French Lick hotel will be laid off in two months. The project's investors told employees during a meeting yesterday that they would receive full pay during the closing -- a combination of unemployment benefits and a supplement from the owners…"

Good if they hated their jobs perhaps. Although their deal is... generous, as far as lay-offs go, at the end of the day they are still going to become unemployed.

It's a little harsh though, as by the sounds of it the staff to be laid off is only a portion of the total workign staff. What about the rest? Are they on pay all year and still on the books?

That's a little in depth for casino chat, teddy Wink

Very true, and it's not fantastic news for some, but it is for others so as with any kind of development or change in structure, there are those that benefit and those that don't. Can't please them all as they say.
